While physical components (technique, strength endurance and skill) are critical to athletic performance, mindset (psychology) is the true determining factor of athletic performance.  Simply stated, the mind has ultimate power over the body driving key capabilities of discipline, desire, focus, tolerance for pain and discomfort and will to perform at the desired level.  If you have ever experienced a flow state (been in the zone) while playing or competing you know this to be true.  Neurological studies have shown that high-level athletes use less of their brains playing sports than non-elite athletes.  Meaning that to reach new levels of performance or consistency mindset is key.  Performing without that pesky voice in your head judging you or giving you instruction on your performance will dramatically elevate your performance.  .
Yet, while mindset is perhaps the ultimate differentiator in performance, little attention and time is given toward developing and enhancing mindset in athletics or life generally for that matter.  Exclusive focus is generally placed on the technical, tactical and physical side of athletics.   The good news is that developing mindset (the mental aspect) in sports and fitness can be the ultimate competitive advantage.  How many times have you seen and heard of an off the charts athletically gifted person having fleeting success in athletics and, in contrast, a not-so athletically blessed person achieving great heights in sports and athletics?
The sport of tennis is perhaps the ultimate example of mindset over physical gifts.  In his 2024 college commencement speech Roger Federer noted “I won almost 80% of singles matches…but I won only 54% of points.  Even top ranked tennis players win barely more than half the points they play.”   The concept is that once a point or play is over it’s behind you and nothing you do can change that, but if you dwell on it or it gets stuck in your head it will determine the outcome of the next point or play negatively.

No one is generally harder on an athlete than the athlete themself (dwelling on past failures or anxiety about future results or missing training or lack of consistency or enjoyment in the process).  While this sometimes is thought of as a benefit creating motivation and fueling hard work, there is a much better way to reach new heights.
